Pride Month and a Tiny Story: Oddly Echoing My Mother

Jo Durocher • Jun 2021 • 1 min read

It’s Pride Month and on a teen show I recently watched with my daughter, two boys came out and slow-danced together on prom night

“How lucky you are to live in an age where no one in the gym laughs at this,” I said. “This wouldn’t have happened in my day,” I continued, oddly echoing my mother.

Sitting with this, I added, “Maybe next we can shed the coming-out piece.”

Because we could do away with closets altogether. Because we could each slow-dance in the gym without having anything to come out of.

I hope to re-echo my mother soon. Maybe as soon as this pride month.
